Todd-AO was founded in 1953 as a joint venture of Michael Todd and the American Optical Company for the purpose of developing and distributing a large format theatrical presentation.
As Todd-AO evolved into the dominant creative post production sound services company it is today, the company has been home to many of the most legendary creative artists in the history of sound and filmed entertainment. Todd-AO has built a strong creative community and developed a reputation as a creative refuge where visionary filmmakers could collaborate with passionate sound professionals to better leverage sound as a story-telling device. Early groundbreaking and award-winning work included projects such a Who Framed Roger Rabbit; Empire of the Sun; E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial; 1941; Close Encounters of the Third Kind; The Exorcist; and Cabaret.
This spirit of innovation and love of story-telling is still a driving force at Todd-AO today. The company continues to be the creative epicenter of post production sound and maintains its position as the leading independent provider of post production sound services to the film and television industries, operating from three state-of-the-art facilities throughout the Los Angeles area.
